Hi All,
Welcome to this Blog on Smart Devices/Sensors of IoT/IIoT world.
What is a Sensor?
Sensor is any device which measures a physical property and records, indicates or produces an output or in some cases controls, if equipped with an actuator.
What is Smart sensor?
This is a sensor which produces an electronic/digital output and is enabled with network connectivity.
Smart Devices/Sensors form the bottom most layer of the IoT architecture. These are the devices which interface with the physical world. These devices in general measure the physical properties/parameters and generate digital data and communicate this data to various systems/devices of the IoT network.
All these Devices are network enabled and interconnected, readable remotely and in some cases these devices also include actuators which can be controlled remotely.
Smart Sensors/Devices of IoT network.
Sensors/devices of this world fall under two classes. One class of IoT increases the comfort and convenience levels of the consumer.Typical use cases of this area are smart homes, smart street lighting system, consumer IoT of products or services and so on.And the other class of smart devices/sensors of IoT is in industrial use cases(generally classified as IIoT)- like Process/Plant automation,Aviation control,Utility SCADA, Biomedical Instrumentation etc.
If any failure in the Smart Device/Sensor network of consumer world(used in our daily lives) will
only cause discomfort levels( in most of the cases). For example in case of failure of an automated street light control system will result in chaos for some time and it can be managed with manual control.
In case of Industrial IoT (IIoT) these smart devices /sensors are used to measure, monitor and control the industrial process (like Aviation control, control of power plant and chemical reactor etc)as shown below.
Sensors use cases in IIoT process are-
Chemical property sensing devices, such as viscosity, density, chemical composition and temperature sensors used in a chemical reactor.
Pressure, flow, level and temperature sensing devices of a process plant.
Material handling systems of a steel/cement plant-devices which monitor and control the status of various conveyors, motors, proximity sensors, storage and sequence controlling devices.
SCADA systems at Utilities like Power transmission/Distribution-Devices here measure the active/reactive power, voltage, frequency,Status of Circuit Breakers, currents and recently PMUs also.
Other use cases are in Communications,Refineries,Railways,Aviation,Medical Instrumentation,
Agriculture and the list continues.
In case of IIoT, the sensor network forms part of automated process control. And if any failure in one of the sensors will result in the failure of entire process and will result in huge loss which may be both tangible and in-tangible.In some cases may result in human loss also.So the sensors equipped with IIoT networks come with some additional features(compared to sensors of IoT) such as high resolution/reliability,low power consumption,redundancy/standby etc.
Let me explain the IIoT case with an example of a Thermal Power plant. Here maintaining the water level, temperature, pressure across the boiler and maintaining the inlet water pressure/temperature/flow and outlet steam pressure/temperature/flow are very crucial for the successful operation of the boiler for its entire operating period.Boiler is maintained under its desired steady state of operation for the entire run of the process by measuring all the above parameters and applying the well tested control system.Any faulty measurement of these parameters will result in failure of the control system and may result in explosion of boiler in some cases.
Hope by now the difference between the smart devices/sensors of an IoT network and those of an IIoT network is clear.
Further in our journey we will be dealing more with smart devices/sensors of IIoT.
Have a nice day.
Thanks,
